I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately as to what to wear to engagement or other lifestyle sessions. The problem is that there’s not an easy answer. I usually end up racking up a list that is either too long or too in-depth to really be effective on the phone, so I’ve decided to do a sticky post about it to help future couples and individuals out. Please use it as a basic guide, but don’t get overwhelmed… in the end, it’s just clothing.

*thanks Matt & Erin for being my models!

Do’s:

Wear the right size – basically watch out for baggy clothing, untucked shirts, etc they’ll make you look bigger than you actually are.

Similar color palette – matching can look really cool, just please… don’t wear the exact same outfit.

Bold colors, not bold patterns – watch out for patterns that dominate. They’ll take the emphasis away from your faces and body shape.

Dark jeans are a great base to work from (for both women/men). Pair ‘em with a dressy and causal top and you’re set.

Fun accessories like a chunky necklace, scarf, earings, etc all look really great in photos (plus they can help show ppl your unique style).

Props are another fun way to add a bit of “you” into photos.

You’re favorite cocktail dress – a great way to add a bit sophistication to your session.

Bring more than one outfit (more/less dressy).

Don’ts:

Bright white anything. People’s eyes go to the area with most contrast… and we want them to be looking at your faces (also, white pants/shorts/etc get dirty easily).

Low cut anything. Make sure it’s tasteful, or you might regret it in the future.

Something you can’t walk (or possibly run) around in…

That’s about it for now. Please let me know if I’ve left something out that you’ve got a question about (in regard to what to wear).

Thanks!
